Challenges
At a large mining site in Gansu, China, mining trucks are essential equipment for daily operations. However, due to the vast area of the mining site and the large number of trucks, the company faced difficulties in accurately managing the fuel consumption and travel routes of each mining truck. This information gap led to fuel waste and increased operational costs. Additionally, there was no reliable method to track the trucks’ real-time locations or conduct long-term data analysis.
Solution
To address these challenges, we provided a smart fuel consumption and route monitoring system for the mining operation. The system is centered around external adhesive fuel level sensors, GPS modules, and 4G wireless transmission modules, complemented by a software platform for real-time monitoring and long-term analysis of fuel consumption and travel routes.

Technical Components
- External Adhesive Fuel Level Sensor
- Installed at the bottom of the truck’s fuel tank, this non-invasive sensor accurately monitors fuel level changes, avoiding damage to the tank structure.
- Designed to operate stably in harsh environments, with resistance to vibration, water, and dust.
- GPS Module and 4G Wireless Transmission
- The GPS module provides real-time tracking of the truck’s exact location and travel route.
- The 4G module transmits fuel consumption data and location information to a server in real-time, accessible via mobile or computer for monitoring.
- Data Analysis and Visualization Platform
- The software platform offers real-time data monitoring and supports fuel consumption analysis on a weekly, monthly, and yearly basis.
- Users can view the travel routes of each truck, easily identifying potential resource waste or efficiency issues.
Advantages
This solution significantly improves the management efficiency of mining trucks and enables data-driven decision-making for the mining enterprise:
- Improved Fuel Efficiency: By monitoring fuel consumption data, high fuel-consuming vehicles or inefficient usage patterns can be identified, allowing for timely adjustments in scheduling or maintenance plans.
- Optimized Route Planning: Analyzing the trucks’ travel routes helps optimize transportation paths, reducing unnecessary fuel consumption.
- Real-Time Monitoring and Remote Management: Fuel consumption and location data are visible in real-time, allowing managers to monitor the mining operations anytime, anywhere.
- Long-Term Trend Analysis: The system automatically generates weekly, monthly, and yearly fuel consumption reports, assisting the enterprise in developing refined management strategies.
Results and Benefits
After the system was deployed in the Gansu mining area, it successfully monitored the fuel consumption and travel routes of over 80 mining trucks. The specific outcomes include:
- A mining truck experienced an abnormal increase in fuel consumption. The system identified a fuel tank leakage issue, enabling timely repairs that prevented further fuel wastage.
- By analyzing the trucks’ routes, it was discovered that some trucks were making redundant trips. Adjusting their routes saved approximately 15% in fuel costs.
